Social Lovers, XL Middleton, Moniquea, Xica Soul live in the Locker Room
is a West Coast funk/soul/disco-influenced groove band known for their "street funk with a splash of class," blending bossa nova, funk, and 80s synths with DJ Matty P, Megan Doherty, and other members, emerging from Phoenix but active across LA and NYC, creating danceable tracks for labels like Star Creature Universe and Hobo Camp.
XL Middleton
is an American rap recording artist, DJ, keyboardist, record producer, and label co-owner. XL Middleton co-founded and co-owns the label, MoFunk Records, through which some of his own albums were released, both recorded alone and as collaborations with other acts. Since G-funk is one of those rap sub-genres that are known for incorporating live instrumentation more often or rather than samples, he incorporates live guitar and percussion playing in his music in addition to him playing keyboards and synthesizers, giving his works more of an authentic, organic sound and feel. Other acts with whom he collaborated on various songs include Crooked I, Sly Boogie, and Big Steele, among others.
Moniquea
No stranger to the spotlight, Moniquea solidified her local presence by singing at Pasadena’s world-famous Rose Bowl at only 15 years old. Quickly moving past hometown boundaries, she went on to open for Westside Connection during the height of their success, and has since performed at nearly every reputable venue in LA – The Whisky, The Roxy, Viper Room, Cinespace, The Echo, and more.
Moniquea and her music has also been featured in a number of music articles, magazines, websites and blogs, including: AllMusic, Do Androids Dance, Impose, Noisey Music by VICE, Okayplayer; and in Los Angeles’ biggest music publication, LA Record, where she landed on the front cover in 2015.
After independently releasing her self-titled debut in 2011, Moniquea partnered with producer XL Middleton and released the album Yes No Maybe in 2014, followed up by Blackwavefunk in 2017. It is through these records and her current and future musical endeavors that she delivers modern funk, as refracted through the lens of her early influences. What Moniquea creates is not ‘pastiche’ nor ‘retro,’ but a faithful reinterpretation of sounds that came from the dawn of the synth, perfectly balanced with one eye focused squarely on the future.
Xica Soul
is a Los Angeles-based DJ known for her magnetic presence on the decks that transcends boundaries of genre. Xica is an established presence in the local Los Angeles scene, but she is no stranger to stages globally — she has played Boiler Room in Los Angeles, Good Room in New York, Multi Multi Festival in London, Sunday Sunday in Mexico City, and many more. Her monthly dublab radio show, SoundProof, is a platform for sonic exploration and discovery, where her passionate musical voice shines through. Xica is also a past resident of Hyde FM and Worldwide FM, and has played guest shows on Kiosk Radio, NTS, The Lot Radio, and Fault Radio.
